The History of LA LAKERS

From the George Mikan-led Minneapolis Lakers teams of the ’40s and ’50s to the “Showtime” era Magic Johnson teams of the late 1980s to Shaquille O’Neal and Kobe Bryant’s dynasty of the early 21st century, one thing has been consistent about the Lakers: winning. The franchise has boasted a host of Hall of Famers and has compiled a string of championships which has scarcely been rivaled in the history of American sports.

Berger and Chalfen relocated the team to Minneapolis, with home games being played at both the Minneapolis Auditorium  and the Minneapolis Armory. The “team” that Berger and Chalfen had actually purchased consisted only of equipment; since the team had appeared to be on the verge of folding, all of its players had already been assigned to other NBL teams. The franchise was re-christened the “Lakers” in reference to Minnesota’s nickname, “The Land of 10,000 Lakes”. Berger and Chalfen brought in Max Winter , later to become a founder and owner of the National Football League’s Minnesota Vikings, to become the Lakers’ new general manager. Winter also took an ownership stake in the team, which he would maintain until he left the Lakers in 1955.

The  2012-2013 Los Angeles Lakers season is the 67th season of the franchise, its 64th season in the (NBA), and its 53rd season in  Los Angeles. The Lakers acquired All Stars and Steve Nash and Dwight Howard, giving them a starting lineup of five All-Stars. Head coach Mike Brown changed the Lakers offensive strategy to the Princeton offence. After an 0–8 preseason record and a 1–4 start to the regular season, Brown was fired. Assistant Bernie Bickerstaff  was named the interim coach until Mike Antoni took over as the full-time head coach. Still, the Lakers began the season 15–21 for their worst start since the 1993-1994.
